“THERE IS NOTHING I WOULD NOT DO FOR THOSE WHO ARE REALLY MY FRIENDS. I HAVE NO NOTION OF LOVING PEOPLE BY HALVES; IT IS NOT IN MY NATURE.” –– Northanger Abbey
Marianne is known for her passion and devotion. She is known for her 100% commitment to a person. I am afraid to admit it but I am one of those people who never does a job half way. I love with all my heart. When I work, I work until I am spent. When I play, I play hard. When I become addicted to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, I end up writing 3 novels in 11 months. Nothing is done half way.
My sister, Tammy, came and helped this week for a few days and she is the embodiment of passion and devotion. When she finds something that inspires her, she puts her whole heart into it. I asked her to paint a wall red in my bedroom and she painstakingly did so and it turned out beautifully!
So I wanted to take a moment and share what I am most passionate about. Seeing that it was just Mother’s Day, I must say I am incredibly passionate about families; both the one I grew up in and my daughters. I talk to my mom and dad almost daily. Right now I have had the opportunity to share the last week with them as they drove out from Colorado to help me get my new house (YAY!!!!) ready to move in. It has a basement apartment that needed overhauled and we have pulled up all the flooring, painted, put down laminate wood floors, changed locks, replaced toilets . . . name it, we have probably done it. My mom, although reaching 68, has been cook, maid, and chauffeur for my family while I work 14 hour days fixing the house with my dad.
Which leaves me to my dad. I have the upmost admiration and respect for him. He is a master electrician but has long since been retired as he is 70 years old. He knows a lot about fixing things and knows more tricks than I could ever imagine. I laugh as he used his tools in ways not intended, like the lip of the measuring tape to score sheetrock (who would have thought?). Most of my siblings at some point or another has worked with him on the job and learned a little about electrical work. I never did. I do not know why but I never was offered that opportunity. So when I bought my house (we are finally moved in!) I knew I needed some electrical work done so I paid for his gas money to drive out from Colorado to help me. I knew putting $300 towards his gas would buy me far more help than simple electrical work and as I stated above, we have been hard at work fixing all the little things as well as big things. I admit that I have been intentionally feeding him Ibuprofen like it was candy, and caffeine accidently (accidently? Yes – I drink Crystal Lite Energy lemonade and he kept drinking out of my bottle). But the truth of it is he has put his heart and soul into helping me. He has given his full devotion to making my house run right. It made me think of the quote above. “There is nothing I would not do for those who are really my friends. I have no notion of loving people by halves; it is not in my nature.”
What it boils down to is that I feel so incredibly loved by my kids because of Mother’s Day and seeing their exhausted faces every night this week, and by my sister Tammy and parents who have served me and loved me not in halves, but with whole body and spirit. I hope my kids and family and friends know that I love them with a deep passion like Marianne and would return the favor to them or pay it forward in any way possible. May you all love in whole. May your passion for what you love be 100%. For loving something is entirely worth it, if you are completely devoted. Love hard and long.
